about

The title was conceived first: a loose conceptual idea right from the beginning: the idea that creativity and magick are all around us and that it is the gift and ability of anyone to pull that energy in, mold it, shape it and then send it back out to conjure thunder, move mountains, merge with nature, and or to move, effect, change human beings.
Thunder Conjuring Mind is by far the most eclectic, genre transcending release to date that Second Culture has released. Still rooted in synthesizers, sequencer-driven, drum machines / programmed rhythm, with layers of lushness and ambience. But this time we have added, for the first time ever, a proper drummer, playing a drum kit: Zach Taylor; an awesome addition contributing heavily to the largeness we were shooting for, as well as having an awesome counter-point and feel to our electronic side. Also new on board is Amy Conger doing vocals and found sound; the found sound appears in the form of perfectly chosen dialog and various bits of ambience in many forms in their natural states and heavily processed.
The usual suspects at the core of the music as well: Keyth in his usual foundational role with synths / sequencers / programmed percussion; Andy stepping almost exclusively into a role of production doing less vocals than Flying Potion, but finding new instruments of expression in the dulcimer and the Eventide H3000; and Mark Florin with all his electric guitars, Chapman Stick and usual endless treasure trove of rack processors and stomp boxes.
At the on-set of recording Keyth was rekindling his love of Coil and specifically the eclectic masterpiece in their canon called Love’s Secret Domain and putting into the air “the intent” of that great recording. Thunder Conjuring Mind is all over the place with slight hints of various genres, and points in the history of electronic music, but totally a unified work and musical journey in the “album oriented” agenda of the 70’s. Thunder Conjuring Mind completely avoids all established collective thinking associated with electronic music in the last 20 years: rave, club, DJ, coldness, software synthesizers, electronic exclusivity (i.e. “synths only”).
That being said, Second Culture is on this record still heavily influenced by early 90’s UK ambient house, especially the Orb. Without intention we fall into working with mid tempo beats generally associated with “house” or “progressive house”, but our general intention of not following rules and whats been done in the past maybe heads Thunder Conjuring Mind toward a genre in a parallel universe called “Art House” (maybe).
Last, but not least, we added Donny Stanley into our collective, a graphic designer and artist. In finding the true nature of the engine that creates our audio on our last record Flying Potion we wished for a unifying graphic “look” to us, not unlike the distinct look of the best Yes records from the 70’s, and Donny showed up.
Finally, we say, in this record we our very happy to be calling Thunder Conjuring Mind to this point in time, our best output fitting the overall conceptual artistic freedom of music in the 70’s and early 80’s with the reckless independence of expressing yourself however you want at a high standard of quality via computer, software, boutique manufacturing, hardware electronic instruments and internet distribution.
